The interministerial decree amending the existing railway safety framework has been published in the Italian Official Journal, formally introducing the single driver model for freight trains in Italy.
The measure updates the application of occupational health and safety rules in the railway sector, aligning the Italian regulatory framework with the guidelines of the European Commission and the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA). The single driver model is already widely applied in several European countries.
The decree also revises the organisation of railway emergency response, introducing a more streamlined approach. In particular, it removes the requirement to prepare a specific emergency plan for each point of the network, allowing instead the adoption of standardised procedures at line level.
