The breakthrough of the exploratory tunnel of the Brenner Base Tunnel marks significant progress in the construction of one of Europe’s most strategic railway projects.
Once completed, the Brenner Base Tunnel will be the longest underground railway tunnel in the world and a cornerstone of the Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor. This new direct link between Italy and Austria will substantially increase rail freight capacity, reduce transit times, and enhance service reliability across Europe.
At the same time, RFI is upgrading the Verona–Fortezza line, the southern access to the tunnel. These works are crucial to separating passenger and freight flows, ensuring smoother operations and promoting the shift of traffic from road to rail.
With this infrastructure, the FS Group is making a decisive contribution to the competitiveness of freight transport and to achieving the EU’s decarbonisation targets, strengthening rail as a sustainable and efficient solution for businesses and logistics.
